Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable national park is the highlight of gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda and above all, it harbors half of the population of mountain gorillas that are remaining in the world. The park is positioned in the south western part of Uganda in the Kanungu district, estimating 8 to 9 driving hours from the south west of the capital city of Uganda.
This national park first gazette in late 1991 to conserve and protect the endangered mountain gorillas and in 1994 is was declared as a UNESCO World heritage site dues to it’s rich in biodiversity and ecological purpose and it’s under the protection of ‘’UWA’’ Uganda wildlife Authority the body that manages all the ten national parks in Uganda. However, Bwindi impenetrable national park as a total area of about 332 square kilometers and it lies at an altitude of 1160meter to 2607meter above the sea level. Bwindi was infamously known worldwide because of being a home of the highest mountain gorilla where you can visit and leave with a quite unforgettable experience in a lifetime. Bwindi impenetrable forest does not only inhabits these gorgeous mountain gorillas but along your encounter, you can still have another chance of viewing other species in the park. The park is also home to over 120 mammal species such as the great ape “mountain gorilla”, elephants, duiker, civet cats, clawless otters, bush pigs, side-striped jackal, buffaloes, golden cats,220 butterflies ,360 bird species few to be mentioned African emerald cuckoo, African harrier hawk, dark caped bulbul and giant kingfisher and many more.
Thanks to a diverse ecosystem with over 1,000 different types of flowering plants, 310 butterflies, 350 birds, and 120 mammal species, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Colobus monkeys and chimpanzees can be seen swinging between tree branches, disturbing turacos and hornbills en route.
Although Bwindi’s star attraction is undoubtedly gorilla tracking, visitors can also go bird-watching, mountain biking, hiking, or visit nearby villages. Accommodation in the park ranges from lodges and tented camps to community-run guesthouses. Guests can charter flights from Entebbe International Airport to Bwindi, or take the 7-8 hour drive from Entebbe. Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park are around 3hr and 6hr away from Bwindi respectively, making it a possible add-on to an itinerary exploring this part of Uganda.
